As we inch closer to the new season, it’s time to dust off the magnifying glass and dive deep into the heart of the Colts’ roster. Today, we’re putting the spotlight on 7 Colts players who can perform on the field, but have largely escaped the attention they deserve. Allow us to introduce you to some of the Colts’ most underrated players entering 2023.

DT Grover Stewart

A formidable interior defender, Stewart creates chaos for opposing offenses. He is a critical part of the Colts’ defense, having achieved career-highs in tackles, sacks, and quarterback hits last season. His contributions often fly under the radar, but his impact is undeniable.

TE Jelani Woods

Standing at 6-foot-7 and 253 pounds, Woods is an imposing figure and an underutilized target. Despite being overlooked in favor of veteran Mo Alie-Cox, Woods exceeded expectations, securing 312 yards and three touchdowns. His potential for a breakout season is high, especially given his proven reliability in the red zone.

K Matt Gay

Signed to the largest free agency deal ever for a kicker, Gay was brought in to address the Colts’ kicking woes. With an 87.8% conversion rate, he ranks fifth in all-time NFL accuracy, making him a vital asset to the team.

WR Alec Pierce

Despite less-than-ideal quarterback play and offensive struggles, Pierce established himself as a reliable target, finishing third on the team in yards and touchdowns. His knack for snagging contested catches makes him a hard-to-defend player, and with improved rapport with quarterback Anthony Richardson, he could be a game-changer.

S Rodney Thomas II

A seventh-round draft pick, Thomas became a standout player following an injury to veteran safety Julian Blackmon. He led the team with four interceptions and accumulated 52 tackles. His speed, physicality, and athleticism position him well for continued success in 2023.

And 2 Rookies To Finish the List

It’s hard to call rookies “underrated” since they haven’t proved anything on the field. But with Anthony Richardson having all eyes on him as a rookie (rightfully so), these guys are being overlooked and will impact many games this year.

WR Josh Downs

Drafted in the third round, Downs brings a much-needed explosive threat to the Colts offense. With his impressive speed and route running, he will likely be a key figure in the offense and may also contribute on special teams, especially with Isaiah Rodger’s pending suspension. He will be competing for the starting slot role early in training camp.

CB Julius Brents

Speaking of filling the role of Isaiah Rodgers, Julius Brents has the opportunity to come in and make an impact right away at cornerback. His elite athleticism mixed with his size could be exactly what the Colts need and he can step in and fill that role on Day 1. He rarely loses jump ball situations, so he is going to be a critical part of our red zone defense.

These players, while underrated, are part of the backbone of the Colts’ roster. They each bring unique skills and strengths to the field, and we expect them to continue making significant contributions to the team’s performance in 2023. As we prepare for the upcoming season, it’s clear that these players, while perhaps not grabbing the headlines, are ready to shine.

So here’s to the underdogs, the unsung heroes, the underrated players who make every game worth watching. Keep an eye on these 7 Colts as we gallop into 2023 – we have a feeling they’re just getting started.
