Indianapolis Indians Offense Continues High Flying Trajectory in Victory Over the Mud Hens
The Indians took the field against the Mud Hens at Victory Field for the second game of the series. Even after the day off, the Indians picked up where they left off on Memorial Day and kept the bats hot.
Explosive Offense
Jared Triolo got the party started in Indy by hitting a line drive to left field, bringing home Cal Mitchell to score the Indians their first run. After a double and walk, from Shakelford and Vilade respectively, Nick Gonzalez came to the plate with the bases loaded. On a 3-2 count, the crack of Gonzalez’s bat echoed through the stands of rising fans as they got to rejoice a Gonzalez grand slam. Before the Mud Hens knew it, they were staring at a 5-0 scoreboard before even getting their first six outs. The Indians would have another big inning in the 6th as 8 runs would cross, bringing the score to 13-1.
Shutdown Pitching
Not only was the offense explosive, but the pitching took on the appearance of an iron bulwark, keeping zeros on the scoreboard for the Hens until the fifth inning. After Justin Henry-Malloy scored from first on a Kerry Carpenter double, the Hens finally had their first run. It was a pitching performance by committee as the Indians would use a total of five pitchers in the winning effort. Using this many pitchers is rare in a game where the team has only given up 1 run. Not one pitcher saw more than two full innings. If there is one thing we’ve learned about Miguel Perez it’s that he is quick to hook his slingers if he feels they aren’t putting out their best stuff. Carmen Mlodzinski would be credited for the win after walking three, giving up a hit, and allowing zero earned runs in his two innings on the hill. Stats that won’t necessarily blow you away, but the timing was right to give him the W. If only there was a way to split the win nine ways between all the pitchers that saw the mound.
With this win, the Indians move to two games ahead of the Mud Hens in the standings and stay steady at one game back from Nashville. The Indians hope to maintain their explosive ways as they try to sink the Mud Hens further into the muck tonight and get their third straight win.
